Welcome to our CaringBridge site. It has been created to keep friends and family updated about our son Deven Strief.

Deven was diagnosed with aplastic anemia on February 14th 2005. This was only a few weeks before his second birthday.

Be sure to read the latest in the journal, view the photo gallery, and drop us a line in the guestbook.

Hey there, well we did labs last night and Deven appears to be holding his own for now. This is a bit of a relief after the drop he had last time with his cold. I hoped he would continue to respond to the higher cyclosporine dose but was worried he may not. Just like the last time he relapsed, it appears it takes some time to recover that bone marrow. He is at least making his own platelets and has a very good white count and therefore immune system. Counts were:

Platelets - 69,000 (normal range is 150,000-400,000)

Hemoglobin - 8.9 (normal is 11.5-15.5)

WBC - 6.1 (normal is 4.0-12.0)

ANC- 2318 (anything over 1000 is normal)

As you can see we have a ways to go with the hemoglobin again, at least it didn't drop much and he did have a good count of baby red cells which means he is making them fine. He still has plenty of energy, an adult would be exhausted with a hemoglobin that low but fortunately it doesn't affect kids as much. Platelets are better than 2 weeks ago, hopefully they pick up the pace and increase faster this next 2 weeks. Also his kidneys are doing pretty well considering the high dose of the cyclo. for his size, thanks to tons of water. It has gotten to be that when I call his name for something he says "I know time for more water right mom."

Anyway, thanks so much for praying for Deven and Happy Halloween tomorrow! My kids are very excited to go trick or treating tonight. What a perfect day for it too, 70 degrees! Deven is a skeleton and Broklyn is a princess, again! I guess you can take the princess out of the castle but you can't take the princess out of the girl:) Okay maybe I'm way off sorry!

Thanks again, Mollie
